Abyssal Learning is an in-depth artificial life and evolutionary biology sandbox set within the unrelenting pressure of the deep ocean. Rather than relying on canned animations or scripted movement loops, the game treats locomotion and survival as pure emergent phenomena driven by physics, neural computation, and natural selection.
Design the Anatomy, Let Evolution Do the Rest
In the creature editor, you piece organisms together from scratch—assembling skeletal frames, joints, and muscular fibers. Once released into the abyss, every specimen enters the water with an unmapped neural network and zero intrinsic knowledge of how to navigate its environment. Locomotion is governed by an unyielding 2D hydrodynamic physics engine where water resistance, drag, and mass dictate whether an anatomical configuration can generate thrust or simply sink into oblivion.
Biological Realism & Neural Architecture
At the core of each organism lies a complex architecture of real computational biology principles:
- NEAT (NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies): Brains expand organically generation after generation. Creatures evolve additional nodes and synaptic connections only when those adaptations directly improve metabolic efficiency and survival.
- Kuramoto Oscillators: Muscle coordination mirrors primitive nervous systems. Locomotion emerges from coupled phase oscillators synchronizing rhythmically across the body—teaching physical "metronomes" to align into viable swimming gaits.
- Epigenetic Plasticity & Baldwin Effect: Adaptations acquired through trial, effort, and habit during an individual’s lifespan feed back into evolutionary pressure, accelerating instincts across generations.
- Dopaminergic Reinforcement: Sensory-motor connections are modulated in real time. Finding food or narrowly escaping a predator releases neurological feedback that reinforces the exact behaviors that kept the creature alive.
- Internal Drives & Emotion: Behavior is not static; it shifts dynamically based on hunger, panic, and curiosity, warping how each organism perceives threats, prey, and its immediate environment.
